Molly
W Routhier (C) 2020

Molly brought me to her room
said there’s no concern
out through the window shone the moon
and soon her love I learned

all one summer we did play
as if there was no end
I knew that it would fade away
but I needed to pretend

she moved like a woodland sprite
danced from place to place
she was dark and she was light
and it showed across her face

she didn’t live inside the town
said she never could
and favored wearing green and brown
like the forest wood

if we raised some little sprouts
I thought they’d bloom beautifully
she said ‘what are you on about?
you won’t do that with me.”

No bearing children, she explained
a sickness of my youth
so liberty is what I’ve gained
and a vision of the truth

and to you that truth I’ll tell
blue eyes wide and round
we just have now so live it well
you’ll soon be in the ground

so like the summer wind we flew
it rolled on endlessly
but as it ended yes I knew
she was done with me

soon the autumn colors changed
she was gone without a trace
leaving not a note behind
nowhere for me to chase
