Daddy died wildly out on the highway
just another Saturday until it went wrong
he wasn’t one to say he loved me still I always knew it
that just wasn’t how he sang his song

and yes I loved him more than I ever told him
he was hard like an oak and twice as strong
and I always listened to what told me
and I often think of those things as I roll along

he’d been drinkin’ that wasn’t unusual
maybe a little more that afternoon
cause it was the weekend and he was meetin’ his friends
fairly ordinary familiar tune

it wasn’t even dark out it wasn’t even rainin’
he wasn’t misbehavin’ all that much
and it was a good truck never gave him trouble
except a little sometimes in 4th with the clutch

he was tryin’ to get it pushed in distracted his attention
just for second and a second more
that was when the young kids out joyridin’
swerved across the white line and Daddy was no more

the way we heard about it police drove up to our house
Mama got silent then said you all go inside
policeman took his hat off she started shaking
that was when I knew that my Daddy died

somebody’s there one day then they’re gone forever
life and death both sit side by side
I wished that I had said more he probably did too
and hadn't waited to tell ‘em till one of you dies
